QR CODE USAGE FAILS

Here's how NOT to use QR codes.

Most violate a few basic tips that you can find on our QR Usage Tips page, some violate the cardinal rule - USE QR CODES :)

No QR Code

Location:  Washington State
Suffering From:
  NO QR Code Used
(bonus) Wearing away from excessive cleaning

Editors Notes:
While business are trying to be socially concious, this business has put up a window decal at face level on their door that seems to be sick. Not only is it starting to rub away, but there is a 40+ character URL with underscores in it - and that's just their Facebook page!

Redbox fail

Location:  Washington State
Suffering From:

  Two QR Codes Used
QR codes too detailed, shorten those URLS!
QR codes in too close proximity
QR codes were scaled down - fuzzy codes don't scan well
They only support iPhone and Android devices
Good Signs:
See their previous fail below - at least they're using QRs now.
  They're backlit for easy scanning

Editors Notes:
I have to commend this attempt at using QR codes in a unique place.  After their previous fail below they have come out swinging with not one, but two QR codes.

No QR Code here

Location:  Washington State
Suffering From:

  No QR code use

Editors Notes:

Here is a great example of where a QR code could save a visitor time and effort.  It's great to show a social media icon, though to not link the user immediately to your page means they have to remember to go back and connect to you later.

Suffering From:

  Black on Blue QR usage
Too detailed of a QR code
  No manual browsing option
Good Signs:
  They're using QR Codes
  They have a Text short-code #

Editors Notes:

Here is a good attempt at using QR codes but they fail right before being very successful.  Fortunately this one will be easy to fix if they use our tips for QR code.

Favorite Fail Location:  Las Vegas, NV
Suffering From:

  Black on Blue QR usage
Too detailed of a QR code
  No manual browsing option
Posted next to a MOVING WALKWAY!
  Poor lighting causing glare
Good Signs:
  They are using QR Codes
  They have social media icons

Editors Notes:

This is one of my favorite and original QR fails.  Unfortunately it's also a photographer fail - I had to take this picture with my Blackberry from a distance and the glare was awful.
Perfect opportunity gone bad

Location: Washington State
Suffering From:

  NO QR Code
Good Signs:
  Pretty handwriting? :)
  Use of social media

Editors Notes:

I really hope these guys pick up QR codes in their store.  They have amazing cupcakes and their staff have excellent handwriting and plenty of time on their hands to make things like this.
